Starring: Joey King, Martin Sheen
Runtime: 1hr 26min
Synopsis from Amazon.com: Four orphaned and homeless siblings happen upon an abandoned boxcar, which, with a little creativity and hard work, they gradually furnish with all the comforts of home. Fearful that they will be sent to live with the reputedly cruel grandfather they have never met, the children keep their new home a secret—until a serious illness forces them to reveal themselves in order to save young Violet.

This heartwarming, animated film slipped under the radar for most people when it came out a few years ago. It tells the story of the first book in the original series by Gertrude Chandler Warner. The original book is very different from later books. Published in 1942, The Boxcar Children featured lithograph-style illustrations and an old-fashioned charm. This film tries to capture that charm with clothing styles reminiscent of the late 40's.

Unique animation and a competent voice cast make this film worth checking out. It runs a little long for a non-Disney film, but the story stays true to the source material. One day, the Boxcar Children will be turned into a live-action comedy mystery (like Jack Black's Goosebumps). Until then, grab the popcorn and enjoy this one at the next family movie night!
