The Dragon Murder Case (1934)
“Philo Vance is a fictional character featured in 12 crime novels written by S. S. Van Dine, published in the 1920s and 1930s. During that time, Vance was immensely popular in books, movies, and on the radio. He was portrayed as a stylish, even foppish dandy; a New York bon vivant possessing a highly intellectual bent.” (IMDB)
I have become a fan of many of the old detectives by listening to the old radio dramas. Available on line. If you are taking a road trip I highly recommend listing. They are a true joy and help pass the time. I came across Philo Vance, after listening I decide to try a movie version. I learned that there were several actors who played the role of Philo Vance. I am not sure yet which actor I prefer. But I do enjoy the character Philo. He is not a standard detective. He seems to not want to be a part of the case but because he has the answers he is force to play the detective. He is wealthy and plays the sophisticated part to a tee. This particular mystery was very intriguing. A man goes swimming and disappears while under water. After draining the pool still no body. The characters are all well played and the story line is very entertaining. I was given the DVD collection and will post my thoughts on the other movies as I watch them. The main actors in “The Dragon Murder Case” are Warren William as Philo Vance, Eugene Pallette as Sgt. Heath, Margaret, Lindsay as Bernice, Lyle Talbot as Leland. The movies are on “You Tube”. The quality is different with each movie. This one is defiantly a thumbs’ up movie. Pop some popcorn, pour yourself some tea and relax to a good old fashion mystery.
